The New Graduate Nurse Residency Program at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center is designed to ease the transition from nursing student to skilled RN. New graduates are coached into independence by our experienced and accomplished nursing staff. This competency-based orientation is coordinated by masters-prepared Clinical Nurse Specialists, Professional Development Specialists and skilled RN preceptors.

Each cohort receives a strategic, planned blend of classroom and hands-on experience. Progress is evaluated on a regular basis with input from your preceptor(s) and Clinical Nurse Specialists, according to established objectives.

The Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center is a state-of-the-art teaching institution. It also is a prime site for community outreach and groundbreaking research, including a regional burn center and landmark facilities for geriatrics, trauma and addiction treatment.

Located in southeast Baltimore, the 130-acre campus is close to the Inner Harbor, historic Canton and Fells Point, the National Aquarium and a host of restaurants, museums and theaters. Johns Hopkins Bayview is right off I-95 and I-895, so commuting is a breeze. And, for a little adventure, the history, culture and entertainment of Annapolis and Washington, D.C. are less than an hour away.

Perfecting your technique...

Phase I:
Classroom learning is combined with targeted skill development specific to the new graduate clinical setting under the support of an experienced preceptor.

Phase II:
Learning transitions from the classroom and clinical setting to a guided one-on-one orientation with an assigned preceptor. Patient assignments and complexity are gradually increased as the new graduate's skills develop.

Specialty Sessions:
Review of common theme topics such as: delegation, communication, infectious disease. These sessions continue throughout the first six months of employment with the intent of easing the new graduate assimilation to professional practice.
