Patients at the Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center’s Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU) present nurses with a wide variety of challenges. The unit treats abdominal, thoracic, orthopaedic and other elective patients, as well as victims of gunshot wounds, assaults and vehicular accidents. This diversity of patients provides a great deal of opportunity to our nurses. Many surgical and trauma patients have underlying conditions, and treating them allows our nurses to expand their knowledge base and experience. Other learning opportunities include ACE positions, trauma team initiatives, classes and unit-based educational offerings. |
