April 7, 2009

Richard G. Bennett, M.D.Richard G. Bennett, M.D., will succeed Gregory F. Schaffer as president of Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center (JHBMC), effective July 1, 2009.

The Raymond and Anna Lublin Professor in Geriatric Medicine, Dr. Bennett was chosen for his proven leadership skills at Johns Hopkins Bayview, where he currently serves as the executive vice president and chief operating officer. His entire professional career is intertwined with the recent history of Johns Hopkins Bayview.

After graduating The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in 1982, Dr. Bennett served his internship at what was then Baltimore City Hospitals. He was midstream in his residency when in 1984, City Hospitals became Francis Scott Key Medical Center as it was acquired by Hopkins. After completing his fellowship in geriatric medicine, Dr. Bennett joined the faculty of the JHU School of Medicine in 1987 and progressively moved up the ranks to full professor. As he entered into his senior faculty years in 1994, the institution finally became known as Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center.

Dr. Bennett understands the challenges of leadership and has grown in his expertise and reputation as a fair-minded leader and consensus builder as he has moved for the past 15 years through a series of leadership positions both with the Medical Center, and with the Bayview Physicians organization. He is passionate about Johns Hopkins Bayview and, as president, plans to advance clinical integration opportunities with the East Baltimore campus while pursuing the execution of the facilities master plan for the Medical Center.
